'We can re-open safely,' Newport tourism industry calls on state to start summer planning

NEWPORT, R.I., (WJAR) — Roughly one year after businesses in Newport were forced to shut down, there's a new push to safely re-open even further as the weather warms up.
"I would say that by mid-summer, we're going to start to feel like what it's normally like in Newport and Southern New England," said Evan Smith, President of Discover Newport.
Smith is among many in the tourism and hospitality industry within the greater Newport area hoping to work with the state to come up with plans for a safe summer and fall that's also beneficial to the economy.
